Science & Bible, Bible & Science

GUESTBOOK

Does anyone agree with this?

One day we may be able to say that we humans understand clearly how the universe began, and how it evolved to its present condition. Of course we can't say that yet, because no one yet knows how the universe began, and the details of what happened after Stage One are still tantalizingly vague.

But even if we were confident of every detail, that of itself would say absolutely nothing about the possible role of an intelligent being in setting it all up. We would be free to say yes or no to that hypothesis. Any such being would presumably be just as likely to bring about his or her creation by devising over-arching laws of cause and effect, such as the laws we study in science, as to work by innumerable intervening acts that over-ride those laws, giving the impression of magic.

When our children and grandchildren have solved some of the unanswered conundrums, as they surely will, some of our preconceived ideas about the small details of religion and morality may have to be modified. But it seems unlikely that the core idea of a designer of the universe can ever be dispelled simply by understanding the steps that led to our present position, even if it appears that step 20 inevitably and automatically leads to step 21, and so on.

Well expressed reasoning Kevin. It appears to me that when we have finally sorted out the details of the beginnings of the universe we will simply be shifting our questions about feasibility of and the nature of a designer (and perhaps redefining the now diminished critical moment of the birth of the universe as the smallish-bang).

I can see the previous 4 questions in this Guestbook but none of the answers. I know that several of the sessions were recorded. Is there somewhere where these recordings can be downloaded?

No, for various reasons we have not aranged download, but you can send a stamped addressed envelope to Geoff Pritchard at York House, Moseley Rd, Hallow, Worcs WR2 6NH and request a DVD from the current series. The offer is restricted to those who have already attended one of our meetings and left some contact details.

This is an excellent programme and website . I enjoyed the first talk I came to on climate change even if it was a subject I was not particularly interested in ! I wish I had heard Ernest Lucas as I read his book and found it most informative .Was his talk recorded by any chance ?
